Would You Make This Request and Offer?

Solomon died and his son Rehoboam became king, “And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king” (1 Kings 12:1).
The people wanted someone to represent them before the new king, “So it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (he was still in Egypt, for he had fled from the presence of King Solomon and had been dwelling in Egypt), that they sent and called him. Then Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying…” (1 Kings 12:2-3).
They looked forward to the reign of the new king, but they had a request and an offer, “Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you” (1 Kings 12:4).
Solomon must have added heavy burdens to the people, whether taxes or some other things. The people wanted that burden lightened, not taken away completely.
So then, would you have said what they said to Solomon? Are you willing to bear some burden for your nation? Would you have said all that they said to Rehoboam? Notice that they said they would serve him! Most people, whether in the church or out of the church, do not want to serve, but to be served. Are you willing to serve to lighten burdens upon yourself?
