The Desolation of Jerusalem

Jesus prophesied to His disciples in the first century, “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near” (Luke 21:20).
Israel had seen Jerusalem surrounded by armies many times before, but this time Jesus warned the people living then that the next time they saw the beloved city surrounded by armies, it would mark Jerusalem’s desolation, that is, that God had finally cut Himself off from the city, making it as any other city. It would never again be a city of glory as it had been during Israel’s existence as the nation of God.
Any nation can so offend God that He gives it up to desolation. It can happen to a city. It can happen to a person. To prevent the desolation of the place where we live, we have to begin with ourselves, looking to see whether we are following the Lord and honoring Him daily.
