What to Do If You Hear of Evil

When you hear that someone has done evil, what do you do? Friends, it seems that most people simply accept the report without investigation. Listen to the news and you will hear journalists doing it all the time, or you will hear them distorting the truth.
Does this happen in the church also? It breaks my heart to say, yes, it does. We assume that the first thing we hear is true, especially if it is evil.
Here is what we should do, “If there is found among you, within any of your gates which the LORD your God gives you, a man or a woman who has been wicked in the sight of the LORD your God, in transgressing His covenant, who has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, either the sun or moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded, and it is told you, and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently” (Deuteronomy 17:2-4).
That was the way the Lord wanted Israel to deal with reports of evil and Paul quoted Deuteronomy 17 (and from chapter 19) to teach that Christians have to operate the same way (See 2 Corinthians 13:1).
Therefore, do not accept everything you hear.
