Balaam Found a Way

In Numbers 22-24 you saw that Balaam could not curse Israel whom God had blessed. However, the appeal of great wealth from Balak, the king of Moab, made Balaam think. He thought that if he kept approaching the Lord, He would change His mind and curse Israel. The Lord would not do it and Balaam spoke as the Lord told him to speak.
Then Moses wrote this, “Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel” (Numbers 25:1-3).
The women of Moab, the women of the kingdom of Balak, seduced some of the Israelites and they joined the Moabites in their idolatry. Then the Lord cursed Israel. Balak got what he wanted. We will learn later that Balaam had something to do with this. Evidently, he told Balak how to get the Lord to curse Israel. While Balaam could not and would not utter a curse against Israel, yet, he knew how to get the Lord to curse Israel and that was by getting some of the Israelites to worship the gods of the Moabites.
Balaam hungered for wealth and he found a way to get it. That is why the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Beware of lusting after material wealth, for that wealth will destroy you.
