Don't Give Up

by J. Randal Matheny, editor
When I was a kid, my grandfather had a Boston Terrier, a small dog with square bulldog jaws and a sweet temperament. We’d throw the tip of a rag in his face, and he’d grab it for a game of tug-of-war.
While we pulled on the rag, the dog would keep his end clamped in his mouth. We’d drag him all around the yard. Some of the cousins would even whirl him in the air. The dog never let go.
We’d always tire of the game before the dog and let him have the rag. I think he laughed at us for giving up.
Don’t give up on your faith. Be as tenacious as my grandfather’s dog. Clamp down on the promise of God. Hang on to the hope Christ gives us.
Don’t throw away your service. Critics always harp. Opposition rises. Obstacles appear. Someone will try to pull the rug out from under you.
But know that the Lord called you to faithfulness. What you do now will determine the difference between eternal life and everlasting perdition.
Don’t give up your family. Don’t quit your devotions, your words of forgiveness and love, your humility in the face of humiliation.
Don’t let go of good efforts, healthy habits, spiritual readings. Later, someone will thank you.
Don’t make the Evil One happy. Because in just a little while, he will tire of fighting against the power of God in you. Let him be the first to surrender!
The tug of war is not for a piece of rag, but for a piece of heaven for us and our loved ones.
So don’t give up!
“If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he also will deny us;
if we are faithless, he remains faithful.”
2 Timothy 2:11b-13a, ESV

  2. I liked this too, always easy to relate to an article about doggies!! I like the thought of, like the terrior, when your cousins whirled him around in the air, still, he hung on!
