The Question of Authority

The chief priest and elders had legitimate questions for Jesus, but the spirit by which they asked and their motives make us question them. “Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, ‘By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?'” (Matthew 21:23).
They wanted to know His authority and where He received that authority. However, they did not ask out of a genuine search for knowledge that they might follow Him, but they were looking to shut Him down. Be sure to read how He dealt with them.
When others ask about your authority, be prepared to discern the spirit and motivation with which they ask, and be ready to show your authority. Also, do not be afraid to put the question right back on them.
