Moses wrote that during the days before Noah’s Flood, “There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6.4).
Much has been the speculation on what Moses meant. A popular theory states that angels married women and the resulting children were giants. However, that seems to be reading more into the text than is there.
Before the days of the Flood, people lived to great ages. Therefore, we know that their bodies were capable of things that our bodies no longer can do. One of those things might have been larger bodies. We do not know how large or tall those people were, but it was significant enough that Moses mentioned it.
He also spoke of them as “mighty men” and “men of renown.” Therefore, they appeared to be great both in body and character, nevertheless, it was not enough. Moses continued to write of the extreme wickedness, especially violence, of the pre-Flood generations.
We might be mighty in body and mental capacity, but if we are not mighty with God in the spirit, then we have gained nothing and we are nothing.
