An Amazing Turn of Events

To read the Bible in a year, read Ezra 1 and 2.
Seventy years passed between the ending events of Second Chronicles and the beginning events of the Book of Ezra. God had ended the Kingdom of Judah and taken the Jews away to Babylon by the hand of the Babylonian army. After seventy years of humiliation, another foreign power released the Jews, but it all happened according to the words of God’s prophets, “Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing” (Ezra 1:1). The foreign king then made an amazing proclamation, “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah” (Ezra 1:2). He then invited the Jews to return to their homeland and to build their temple. Did the Jews ever think they would see that happen? They rejoiced, nevertheless, when you read Ezra 2 you will see how much Judah had shrunk in numbers.
Behold, the goodness and severity of God (Romans 11:22). You read of it in the life of the nation of Judah and you will see it in your own life.
