Why You Need to Know the Sons of David

To read the Bible in a year, read First Chronicles 3-5.
Names, names, and more names, that seems to be the Book of First Chronicles so far. However, every part of it carries significance. For example, chapter 3 begins by telling us the sons of David. Verses 1-3 give the names of the six sons of David born to him while he lived and reigned in Hebron, which lasted for seven and a half years and then he spent thirty-three years reigning in Jerusalem (v. 4). Then verses 5-8 provide the names of the thirteen sons born to David in Jerusalem. The writer, probably Ezra, then said, “These were all the sons of David, besides the sons of the concubines, and Tamar their sister” (v. 9). The question is, as you read the names of the sons of David, can you find the two through who Jesus descended? Both Joseph and Mary, the parents of Jesus, were of the household of David. We need to know these things because we need to know w hether Jesus fulfilled prophecy, and thus, whether He is the Christ. Consult Matthew 1 and Luke 3 if you need to find out what two sons of David brought about the families leading to Jesus.
Read the Hebrew Scriptures, for in them you will discover the truth about the Christ.
