Amnon Had a Friend

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Samuel 13 and 14.
Solomon said,
The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray. (Proverbs 12:26)
Solomon knew because he had a brother who illustrated this truth. Second Samuel 13 says that Amnon loved his sister Tamar (v. 1), but, “Amnon was so distressed over his sister Tamar that he became sick; for she was a virgin. And it was improper for Amnon to do anything to her” (v. 2). Then notice what the Bible said next, “But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. Now Jonadab was a very crafty man. And he said to him, ‘Why are you, the king’s son, becoming thinner day after day? Will you not tell me?’ Amnon said to him, ‘I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister'” (vv. 3, 4). Amnon should have chosen his friends carefully, because he had a friend who was wicked and led Amnon astray. Amnon ended up raping Tamar, and her brother Absalom killed Amnon. And all of this fulfilled what God said would happen to David’s family because of his adultery with Bathsheba and murder of her husband. Soap opera, yes! However, that happens when we follow our hearts rather than the heart of God.
