Difficult Choices

To read the Bible in a year, read First Samuel 19-21.
Listen to what Saul said to his son, “Now Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David; but Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted greatly in David” (1Samuel 19:1). What do you do when your father wants to kill your best friend? Jonathan loved his father because he was Jonathan’s father, not because he had earned it. Also, the Law said to honor your father. Yet, Jonathan could see that David was innocent. Therefore, Jonathan sought to protect his friend, meeting with him and telling him what was going on (vv. 2, 3). Pray that you never have to be in the circumstance of Jonathan. However, many times we have to make a choice between the Lord and some person we love. The Lord is higher than even Saul (or one’s father) and David (or one’s friend). May we always follow the Lord at all costs, but may we also love our family and friends as the Lord loves us.
