Israel Did Evil

To read the Bible in a year, read Judges 6 and 7.
God did good in the sight of Israel, but Israel did evil in the sight of God. Judges 6 begins, “Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years, and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the children of Israel made for themselves the dens, the caves, and the strongholds which are in the mountains” (Judges 6:1, 2). The children of Israel should have been the lords of the land, living well and without fear. Instead they became cavemen, because they did evil right in the sight of God. The writer of the Book of Judges also showed how the Midianites took the crops and livestock of Israel (vv. 3-5). They suffered horribly because of their wickedness, yet, what Midian did to Israel turned out for good, as the next verse shows, “So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD” (v. 6). It was because Israel suffered at the hands of Midian that God’s people turned back to Him, crying to Him for help.
Suffering is never pleasant, yet, it can have the pleasant effective of turning us back to the Lord.
