Quieting Demons When They Spoke the Truth

To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 4:33-44.
In the synagogue where Jesus was, a man with an unclean spirit appeared (Luke 4:33), making this confession, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are–the Holy One of God!” (v. 34). Here was a spirit who knew the true identity of Jesus, yet, the Lord did this, “But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be quiet, and come out of him!’ And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him” (v. 35). This amazed the people and they spread the word about Jesus (vv. 36, 37).
Why would Jesus silence a truth-speaking demon? While they spoke the truth, Jesus did not need the endorsement of a demon. For the same reason, when Ronald Reagan ran for president of the United States, he quickly denied the endorsement of the Klu Klux Klan, and now Barack Obama will probably quickly deny the endorsement of Louis Farrakhan and Jeremiah Wright.
