Respect For the Stuff of Others

To read the Bible in a year, read Exodus 22-24.
If we love our neighbor as ourselves, we will automatically respect his stuff. Exodus 22.1-15 listed several crimes against the property of others and what the thief was to do when caught. One verse that caught my attention in those verses was this one, “If the thief is found breaking in, and he is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt for his bloodshed” (Exodus 22:2). That was brutal, but the thief should not have been in another person’s house without authority. The first fifteen verses goes on to list the various punishments for the crimes against someone’s property. Yet, if we love our neighbor as ourselves, we do not have to memorize a list.
