A Special Woman

To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 23 and 24.
When Abraham died, Moses devoted a few sentences to writing about it and the burial (Genesis 25.8-10). When Sarah died, Moses wrote much about it, so we made it into a chapter of twenty verses (chapter 23). Sarah is one of the few women, if not the only woman, whose age we know when she died. She was one hundred twenty-seven years old! (23.1). Abraham loved her and so he mourned and wept for her (v. 2). Then when he had gathered himself together, he approached the people of the land where he had been sojourning (v. 3), and made a request, “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight” (v. 4). The rest of the chapter shows his kind and humble dealing with the people, and they returned the favor. He had lived an honorable life among them, and they honored him for it. They wanted to give him the land, but he insisted on purchasing it.
Let every wife desire to be as Sarah so that her husband will truly mourn her passing and the people of the land will desire to give a proper burial.
