The War That Should Concern Us

Read the Bible in a year by reading First Peter 2 today.
We hear much talk these days about the war in Iraq, but almost nothing about the war that Peter mentions. The war he warns against everyone one of us fights. If we lose, we are in deep trouble. If we win, the spoils are beyond anything this earth can promise. Peter urges us, “Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul” (1Peter 2:11).
This war fights us inwardly. It is agonizing. Therefore, Peter commands not only to avoid the flesh, but also to avoid fleshly lusts. Once we let the lust get ahold of us, it refuses to let go. Do not set yourself up to fall into situations where you will be tempted. The best way to do this is to focus on Jesus Christ. Think on the good things of which Scripture speaks. If we concentrate on avoiding the lusts, we keep the lusts in our minds, but if we concentrate on the Lord, we keep Him in our minds.
