Imitate the Lord in Suffering

Someone convinced us (and if I knew who it was, I would confront him), that we are not supposed to suffer as Christians. Many verses contradict that idea. Just listen to one, “And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit” (1Thessalonians 1:6).
When the Thessalonians received the word that Paul preached, their fellow-citizens persecuted them for it. In doing so, they imitated the Lord Jesus whose suffering you know very well. We know the suffering of Jesus; yet, we think we should not have to suffer! That does not make sense. Truly, when we do suffer for following the Lord, we are doing just that, following Him in all aspects of His life, which has to include suffering for His dedication to God. You will suffer for the same reason. However, be like the Thessalonians, whom Paul also noted that they received the word “with joy of the Holy Spirit.”
