If Animals Could Not Make Us Perfect…

Read the Bible in a year by reading Hebrews 10:1-18 today.
Think about the implications and other applications of the first verse of Hebrews 10, which says,
For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect (Hebrews 10:1).
God had commanded the animal sacrifices; nevertheless, the animals themselves did not make the people of Israel perfect. If animal sacrifices did not make Israel perfect, what about all the things that we try to make us perfect?
Shall we reach perfection through bodies that have been honed with the right diet and exercise?
Shall we reach perfection through large investments and a secure retirement?
Shall we reach perfection through higher education?
Shall we reach perfection through the exact home we covet?
We shall reach perfection the same way that the people of Israel could reach it, and that was through fearing God and keeping His commandments. It was not the animals that brought perfection, but it was following the Lord, and that is what the Book of Hebrews and the rest of the New Testament teach. Follow the Lord and the other things in life will fall into place.
