God Wants to Forgive Us

Read the Bible in a year by reading Jeremiah 34-36 today.
Jeremiah 36 is an interesting chapter. In it, the prophet revealed to us that God had him write what would be the first major portion of the Book of Jeremiah. Then the prophet had his scribe read it to the king of Judah, who proceeded to cut up the scroll with a knife and throw it into the fire. God instructed Jeremiah to replace the original document and to add to it. Much of what we have read thus far in the Prophecy of Jeremiah has been doom. That was not what the king wanted to hear, so, he destroyed the first writing of the prophet.
However, why did God have the prophet write doom and gloom? Jeremiah 36:3 reveals the answer. It says,
“It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the adversities which I purpose to bring upon them, that everyone may turn from his evil way, that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin” (Jeremiah 36:3).
Did you hear the Lord’s motive? He wanted the Jews to repent that He might forgive them. There used to be a woman who subscribed to this list who was just like the king of Judah. She did not want to hear unpleasant things. She said that she hoped everyone on this list had good self-esteem. However, she did not understand why the Lord reveals such things in the Scripture.
