"If God…."

Peter said, “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; then the Lord knows how to … keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment” (2 Peter 2:4-9).
It is very easy for people in this generation to take God for granted. The emphasis many have placed on the grace of God sometimes leaves them thinking that God really doesn’t expect compliance to his will. Many Americans think of “sin” as an outdated word. A recent poll found a new category for morals. Some thought certain behaviors were immoral, while others thought it morally okay. The third category was labeled, “not a moral issue.” Of all Americans, 31% thought getting drunk was not a moral issue, 35% thought smoking marijuana was not a problem, 33% thought homosexual behavior was not a moral issue, 37% thought we should not judge sexual behavior between unmarried adults, and 42% had no moral feelings about gambling.
What people think to be “no big deal” may indeed be a big deal to God. After all, he is the one sinned against. He is the one offended. Callousness to sin is a sign of godlessness.
God has shown that he means business in punishing sin. Repentance does indeed matter. The blood of Jesus and the grace of God is great for those who will penitently come to God. But for those who ignore God’s teaching, there is a serious warning — even for angels.

  1. Good article, Phil. You are right in that people want to arbitrarily decide what is important and what isn’t. It is the further erosion of absolute truth. Thanks again.
