High Expectations!

Thom S. Rainer in his book, High Expectations, says that churches that expect much from their members grow faster and keep their members better than those who had low expectations. He lamented that some churches expect less of their members than civic organizations. “We have dumbed down church membership to the point that it means almost nothing” (p. 12).
What does the Lord expect out of his people? Are his expectations of us high?
1. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your mind, and all your strength” (Mark 12:30).
2. “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:16).
3. Take up your cross daily and follow me (Luke 9:23).
4. Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Luke 9:24).
5. “Hate” (not love more) family and even self to be My disciple (Luke 14:26).
6. Renounce all that he has (Luke 14:33).
7. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me (Matthew 11:28-30).
8. Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable (Romans 12:2).
9. The love of Christ controls us; he died for all that they who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died and rose again on their behalf (2 Corinthians 5:14,15).
10. I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I; but Christ lives in me (Galatians 2:20).
11. Consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry (Colossians 3:5).
12. In speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe (1 Timothy 4:12).
13. The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also (2 Timothy 2:2).
14. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
15. Not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near (Hebrews 10:25).
16. Abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul (1 Peter 2:11).
These are not all the expectations, but they help us understand that God wants us completely to follow and serve Him. Are you?

What does the Lord expect out of his people? Are his expectations of us high?

  1. Thanks for the article. As I read it, I thought of Micah 6:8:
“He has showed you, O man what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.”
