All Right So Far

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
Barbara Bush, wife of “Forty-one,” mother of “Forty-three,” likes to offer this prayer:
“Dear Lord,
So far today I am doing all right. I have not gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or been self indulgent. I have not whined, cursed, or entertained evil thoughts. However, I am going to get out of bed in a few minutes, and I will need a lot more help after that. Amen.”
Yes, it’s true. The only people who have made no mistakes today are those who haven’t woken up yet! The rest of us have ventured and gained … and failed too, no doubt. But of course even those who have not left their room may have sinned …. by omission!
“Anyone who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins” (James 4:17).
By reminding you of this, I don’t mean to increase the level of guilt you feel; rather, I mean to teach a little humility. We all make mistakes.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
We’re all in the same boat. So when someone else makes a mistake … and asks for forgiveness, the ball is in our court to do something about it.
Can you fathom what that might be?
