Jesus, the source of peace

We desperately need peace in our busy world. The peace that we seek can only be found in Christ. Spiritual peace is the most substantial and fulfilling blessing we can obtain.

In Mark 6:45-52Mark 6:45-52
English: World English Bible - WEB

45 Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he himself sent the multitude away. 46 After he had taken leave of them, he went up the mountain to pray. 47 When evening had come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 Seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea, and he would have passed by them, 49 but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he immediately spoke with them, and said to them, “Cheer up! It is I! Literally, “I AM!” Don’t be afraid.” 51 He got into the boat with them; and the wind ceased, and they were very amazed among themselves, and marveled; 52 for they hadn’t understood about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

, we find the apostles getting into a boat and sailing to Bethsaida. Jesus remained on the shore to pray and rest.

Between three and six the next morning, these experienced sailors find themselves in a vicious storm that threatens their lives. Three to four miles into the Sea of Galilee, they are “straining at rowing, for the wind was against them” (Mark 6:48Mark 6:48

, NKJV). The word “straining” means “torment.”/1

Jesus comes in the darkest part of the night to exhausted men whose nerves are frayed to the breaking point. In fear for their lives, they look up and think they see a ghost walking on the water. Jesus responds to their cries of fear by saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid” (6:50). When he steps into the boat, the storm ceases.

The text says that Jesus would have passed them by. Why would he have given that impression? My guess is that Jesus wanted them to recognize him and invite him into the boat. Jesus wants us to come to him, rather than him pursuing us (Matthew 11:28Matthew 11:28

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

66 At this, many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67 Jesus said therefore to the twelve, “You don’t also want to go away, do you?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.

Jesus did not want them to be frightened. He does not want his disciples to live in fear. In John 14:1John 14:1

14 1 “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.

, he says, “Let not your heart be troubled.” He was telling the apostles of his impending death. Jesus was literally saying, “Stop letting your heart be troubled.” Second Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” He wants us to be in peace. Whether we will seek that peace is completely within our control.

Jesus gives us peace in the following areas.

First, Jesus brings us peace with God. In Isaiah 59:2Isaiah 59:2
English: World English Bible - WEB

2 but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

we read, “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.” Yet, God has an answer to this terrible problem.

Romans 5:6Romans 5:6

6 For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

says, “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” Three verses later, Paul writes, “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (5:9). We can now be at peace with God through Jesus.

Second, Jesus brings us peace with men. God’s word shows us how we can have good relationships in this life. Admittedly, we will not be able to get along with everyone. Romans 12:18Romans 12:18
English: World English Bible - WEB

18 If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

WP-Bible plugin
says, “If at all possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” It will not be possible, therefore, to get along with everyone. But we will have happier families and marriages because we are following the advice of Scripture.

Third, Jesus brings us peace with ourselves. Romans 13:9Romans 13:9
English: World English Bible - WEB

9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not give false testimony,” “You shall not covet,” TR adds “You shall not give false testimony,” and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This is a foundation commandment of God (Mark 12:31Mark 12:31
English: World English Bible - WEB

31 The second is like this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

). Before we can love others, we must first love ourselves. Yet so many find themselves miserable over their guilt, shortcomings, and mistakes.

We hold grudges against others and punish ourselves constantly. Jesus lifts us up out of the bed of misery and exalts us as worthy of being made “in the image of God” (Genesis 1:26Genesis 1:26
English: World English Bible - WEB

26 God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Turn to Jesus, the source of peace that “surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7Philippians 4:7
English: World English Bible - WEB

7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
