Lord, you never felt sorry for a single soul. You showed compassion, as also our Lord Jesus Christ was moved to help the needy.
But we often let our feeling sorry for others replace mercy, for passive pity is easier than deliberate acts of kindness.
Produce in us, Lord, urges to help those in need, thoughtlessness of self, and thoughtfulness of others. Prod us to act on those urges, surfacing as impulses from your heart which saw a lost humanity and sent your Son to die in our place.
Keep us from feeling sorry for people, thinking they are beyond help or that we cannot help them. For you know there is no lost cause; else, we would never have received salvation.
From our tireless Lord of compassion, Amen.
